How to create angular dimensions in Revit
Angular Dimension measures the angle between references that meet at a common point, not the distance between them.
What Angular Dimension measures
The Aligned and Linear dimension tools measure distance, how far apart two references are. Angular Dimension measures something else: the angle formed where two or more references meet.
That's useful for documenting the opening of a corner wall, the angle between two sections of a facade, or any case where what matters isn't how far, but how much it turned.
Step by step
- Activate the tool Annotate, Dimension panel, Angular.
- Pick the first reference Place the cursor on the first element and click. Press Tab before clicking to switch between the wall face and the centerline.
- Pick the second reference Place the cursor on a second element, which can't be parallel to the first, and click. You can include more than two elements in the same dimension, as long as they all meet at the same point.
- Drag the arc to size it Drag the cursor to position the dimension arc at the distance you want from the intersection point.
- Click to place it With the arc at the right size, click to create the dimension.
Common problems
You can't dimension a full circle. You can't drag the dimension arc past a certain point to close a full circle.
The dimension won't accept a third element. If you're trying to include more than two walls in the same angular dimension and Revit refuses, check that they all actually meet at the same point. That's a requirement of the tool, not a limit on quantity.
