How to dimension doors and windows in Revit
On doors and windows, Aligned Dimension doesn't switch between face and centerline like on a wall: it switches between the opening edge and the element's center.
What's different on doors and windows
On a wall, Aligned Dimension switches between face and centerline. On a door or window, the switch is different: the opening edge or the element's center. Both options are available at the same point, and you pick with Tab before clicking, the same way it works on a wall.
Step by step
- Activate the tool Annotate, Dimension panel, Aligned, with Individual References selected.
- Move the cursor near the door or window Revit highlights a reference, opening edge or element center, depending on where the cursor is closer to.
- Press Tab to switch, if needed Each press switches between the opening edge and the element's center. Click once the right one is highlighted.
- Repeat for the other end of the chain It can be another door, a wall, a grid. Keep clicking if you want to include more elements in the same dimension.
- Move the cursor away and click to place To finish, click an empty area of the project. Esc cancels the dimension instead of finishing it.
Common problems
The dimension measured the opening, not the center (or the other way). Check which reference was highlighted before clicking. Select the dimension you already created and look at the witness lines, or redo it with Tab until you find the one you wanted.
Two doors close together, and Revit keeps picking the wrong one. Zoom in further. The closer the cursor is to the right element, the easier it is for Revit to offer its reference instead of the neighbor's.
