How to dimension to grids in Revit
A grid doesn't have a face or centerline to switch like a wall. It's a single reference: you move the cursor near the line and click.
A grid works like any other reference
A grid doesn't have a face or centerline to switch between. Each grid is a single reference: you move the cursor near any point of the line and click. It's simpler than dimensioning a wall on that specific point, even though the rest of the process is the same.
Step by step
- Activate the tool Annotate, Dimension panel, Aligned, with Individual References selected.
- Click the first grid Move the cursor near any point of the grid line and click.
- Click the second grid Repeat on the next grid. Both grids need to be parallel to each other for Aligned Dimension to work.
- Keep clicking to include more grids Before placing it, you can select every parallel grid in the plan into a single chain.
- Move the cursor away and click to place To finish, click an empty area of the project. Esc cancels the dimension instead of finishing it.
Common problems
Revit won't let you click the grid. Check that the grid is visible in the current view (Visibility/Graphics might have it turned off) and that no other element overlapping the same point is blocking the click.
The dimension between grids doesn't match the one between walls. They're different references by definition: a grid rarely lines up exactly with a wall's face or centerline. The two dimensions measuring different things is expected, not a bug.
